When Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbat

  1. The Ninth Day of Av falls this year on Shabbat (7/21).  The fast is pushed to Sunday (7/22).
  2. Normally the pre-fast meal consists of a piece of bread and one cooked item (usually an egg). Many have the practice to add ashes to their food.  On Shabbat one eats a modest Seudah Shlishit.
  3. One may not eat or drink after sundown (8:22PM).
    1. The prohibition of fasting on Shabbat is only if it is the entire day.
  4. All other preparations for the fast begin only after nightfall (9:02pm)
    1. First recite Baruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’Chol
    2. Change into non-leather shoes and perform any work necessary.  One may not prepare on Shabbat for after.  Therefore one may not bring non-leather shoes to shul on Shabbat.  The shoes should be left in shul on Friday afternoon or donned at home after reciting Baruch Hamavdil.
  5. On Saturday night, we will recite only the bracha Boreh Meorei Haeish (Besamim is not recited at all).
  6. The laws of the nine days generally continue through midday after the fast, i.e. the tenth of Av.
    1. This year since the fast is pushed off one may shave and listen to music already on Sunday night.
  7. Havdala is recited once the fast is over and consists of only the bracha Boreh P’ri HaGafen, and the ending bracha of Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’Chol.
